La nuova classifica contenuta nel rapporto dell'Onu 'World Urbanization Prospects 2025' incorona Jakarta, capitale dell'Indonesia, che con i suoi 42 milioni di abitanti conquista il gradino più alto del podio e lo manterrà – secondo i modelli – fino al 2050. Tokyo, che ha 'solo' 33 milioni di abitanti', scivola direttamente al terzo posto, superata anche da Dhaka: la capitale del Bangladesh, se manterrà l'attuale ritmo di crescita che l'ha portata a 37 milioni di abitanti, salirà in vetta tra 25 anni.  L'Italia non lascia traccia nel report. D'altra parte, i dati relativi a Roma e Milano non si avvicinano lontanamente a quelli della classifica presa in considerazione dal documento. Roma non arriva a 3 milioni di abitanti, Milano non tocca quota 2.  Il rapporto dell'Onu evidenzia che il numero delle megalopoli (città con una popolazione di 10 milioni o più) è quadruplicato negli ultimi 50 anni, passando da 8 nel 1975 a 33 nel 2025: la maggior parte delle megacities si trova in Asia. Nel 2050, secondo le previsioni, le megalopoli diventeranno 37: nessun nuovo ingresso avverrà in Europa, dove la categoria sarà rappresentata solo da Londra, Mosca e Istanbul. Il rapporto evidenzia che il numero di città in tutto il mondo è più che raddoppiato tra il 1975 e il 2025, ma il 96% delle città ha meno di 1 milione di abitanti. La maggior parte delle città è ancora più piccola, con l'81% caratterizzata da una popolazione di 250.000 abitanti o meno. A livello globale, il 45% della popolazione mondiale vive in città, il 36% in centri urbani e il restante 19% in comunità rurali.
